Travis Kelce is owning up to his concerning start to Chiefs' 2024 season: "Just trying to do too much"
For the past few years, Travis Kelce has been the gold standard at the tight end position in the NFL. However, this season, Kelce has literally and figuratively dropped the ball. Now, the three-time Super Bowl champion has addressed his issues.
The Kansas City Chiefs have maintained their unbeaten record through the three weeks of football. However, for these three games, the vintage Kelce hasn’t stepped up. On Wednesday, during his podcast "New Heights," the 34-year-old opened up about the reasons behind his poor performances while talking to his brother Jason Kelce.
“I've had a lot of catches in this league, man,” Kelce said. “I'm not worried about the catches and the yards, and all of that, I have the most fun when I get the ball thrown my way, I mean, who doesn't?
“It has everything to do with execution and just making sure we're doing everything we can to win these football games, that's always going to be the goal. I think everyone saw my drop in the fourth quarter and the crucial third down, just trying to do too much before putting the ball away.
"That's probably the biggest thing for me is making the play in big-time moments like that. I think with how defenses are playing us right now, I'm not really getting a lot of opportunities to make plays down the field, but not using that as an excuse." [15:30]
Travis Kelce has received the ball only eight times for 69 yards for an average of 8.6 yards per game, with no touchdowns to his name. This is far less than his career average of 10.4 yards per game. However, he said while the team and the offense are thriving despite his failures, he would like to contribute in a meaningful way soon.
Travis Kelce has a chance at redemption
With Patrick Mahomes at his side, the nine-time Pro Bowler does not need many opportunities to finish the game in his favor. After three lackluster performances, Travis Kelce will soon get another chance to right the wrongs and again put himself in the best TE in the league conversation.
The Chiefs will be on the road this weekend as they take on the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 29, at SoFi Stadium. The kick-off is scheduled at 4:25 p.m. ET/3:35 PM CT.
