“Just a matter of when” - Trey Wingo drops major hint on Aaron Rodgers-Jets trade
Aaron Rodgers is yet to be traded to New York as day two of the official league tampering period concludes. The Jets have been rumored throughout the offseason to be the potential landing spot for the Packers legend.
As the entire NFL world awaits the decision of the four-time MVP, former ESPN host Trey Wingo tweeted on Monday that the Super Bowl XLV champ will be heading to New York and the deal is "done." This caught a lot of attention around the league and the report was quickly dismissed by NFL Insider Ian Rapoport. Wingo also ticked off a lot of fans in his viral tweet.
However, Trey Wingo is sticking with his tweet. On Tuesday, Wingo spoke to Ari Meirov of "The 33rd Team" and defended his tweet. The former ESPN host dived in on why the Aaron Rodgers trade hasn't happened yet and the potential timeline for the blockbuster trade to be done. Wingo said:
"The tweet that I put out there is going to happen. It's just a matter of when. And when I say it may drag into next week, you need to be prepared for that. Because it may go into next week. But the deal for Aaron Rodgers has been in place since last Friday."
Wingo mentioned that the organization would want to throw in a fitting sendoff for the Packers legend. He added:
"Now, I don't know exactly what the delay is. And I might have something to do with that. Because when you're trading Aaron Rodgers, you need to button everything up. Right? From the Packers' side how we want to thank him for all these years... And I'm sure the Jets wanna make sure they get it right."
Aaron Rodgers drops free agents wishlist ahead of blockbuster trade
Aaron Rodgers will be dawning a different shade of green in the upcoming 2023 NFL season. However, the four-time MVP has demanded a few things to be taken care of in the first place, ahead of a potential move to the New York Jets.
According to the latest report by ESPN's Dianna Russini, the Packers quarterback wants the Jets to sign a few free agents as per his wishlist. The list includes Randall Cobb, Allen Lazard, Marcedes Lewis, and Odell Beckham Jr. The first domino has already fallen as the Jets signed free agent Allen Lazard to a four-year, $44 million contract on Tuesday.
While it is understandable that he will want his receiving crew from Green Bay, Odell Beckham Jr.'s name on the list took a lot of people by surprise.
This isn't the first time Beckham Jr. has been linked with Aaron Rodgers. Prior to joining the Rams in 2021, the star wide receiver was close to joining the Green Bay Packers. The free agent WR, who is yet to find a new home, would be very much excited to join Rodgers in New York, a place he was very familiar with during his stint with the Giants.
Will Aaron Rodgers play in 2023? When will the trade happen? Is Rodgers going to the Jets? Or is he staying with the Packers? All these questions are likely to be answered as the Packers legend is set to hop on The Pat McAfee Show today at 1 pm ET. Like every other football fan, we'll have to see what the four-time MVP has to say about his future in the NFL.
