Troy Aikman makes feelings known on Bears possibly trading for Kyle Shanahan in 2025 NFL offseason
For the Chicago Bears, finding the right head coach to replace Matt Eberflus is the number-one priority for the 2025 offseason. After the firing of Eberflus, the discussion revolved around the hiring of an offensive coach to help in Caleb Williams' development during his second season.
But extreme measures were discussed. With the San Francisco 49ers struggling after their Super Bowl appearance, NBC Sports analyst Mike Florio discussed the possibility of the Bears making a blockbuster trade for Shanahan, just as the Denver Broncos did in 2023 for Sean Payton.
On Monday, as ESPN broadcasted the game between the Bears and the Minnesota Vikings, Troy Aikman discussed the possibility. And he was all in favor of a deal for Chicago's perspective:
"There has been discussion about, 'Do you give up some picks and see if you can maybe make a deal for a guy like Kyle Shanahan?' I would be all in on that. Because he would develop a quarterback and is a hell of a head coach."
At this point, this is more about a rumor that started through the media than anything else. Head coach trades are extremely rare in the league and Shanahan is held in the highest regard inside the 49ers organization.
Kyle Shanahan to the Bears: could the blockbuster trade actually happen?
Shanahan has already ruled out the possibility. As the rumor started to get track, the head coach made it clear during a press conference that he wanted to stay with the San Francisco 49ers after the 2024 season.
"I don't know why they come out, but I don't want to be any place in the world more than here. My family feels just as strong, if not a lot stronger. So I hope he's gonna have to kick me out of here."
The head coach is considered one of the most brilliant offensive minds in the league, with his teams making three Super Bowls, two as the 49ers' head coach and one as the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator, although they lost in all three opportunities.
In his career, he has a 70-59 record, and his teams have made the NFC Championship Game four times from 2019 to 2023. No wonder why the Bears, or most of the teams in the league, would be interested if he becomes available.
