Tyreek Hill detained: Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis alleges police brutality, demands NFL stars speak up over leaked video footage
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill's detainment qualified for the top tier of breaking news on Sunday morning. Headlines were made and notifications were sent as pictures of Hill in handcuffs went viral in seconds.
Hill had an altercation with the police just two hours prior to kickoff. The Dolphins are set to face off against the Jacksonville Jaguars at 1 p.m. this afternoon. However, the circumstances of Tyreek Hill's detainment incited a lot of frustration from multiple NFL personalities.
Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis was among the several names to speak out after footage emerged of Hill's run-in with law enforcement in Miami.
As video footage emerged of Hill face down on the pavement outside his Lamborghini, Revis took notice and tweeted:
"Every player from every league should be speaking on Tyreek's detainment. From the video, it looks like the cop assaulted him as he was detained. Just wild behavior!"
ESPN's Stephen A. Smith also demanded an inquiry, calling the police's behavior "totally unnecessary."
"I know the Scottie Scheffler incident was in Georgia — not Florida — and he was arrested, detained, booked. I also know we don’t know all the details, blah….blah…..blah! But he wasn’t faced down on the ground in cuffs? Then forcibly sat down again by officers a second time. Nah! This story isn’t going away — and it doesn’t need to," Smith tweeted.
Why was Tyreek Hill detained?
ESPN's Jeff Darlington reported that Hill was pulled up for reckless driving just outside the Hard Rock Stadium.
The NFL superstar reportedly got into a verbal altercation with the police on the scene, following which one of the officers placed him in handcuffs. He was then cited and released after the situation was de-escalated.
Will Tyreek Hill play against the Jacksonville Jaguars?
Per multiple reports, Hill was released by the police and made it back in time for the game. The Dolphins officially cleared Hill to face the Jaguars. This means he can now renew his pursuit of Calvin "Megatron" Johnson's single-season receiving record of 1,964 yards.
