Vikings' J.J. McCarthy gets major update after suffering season ending injury in preseason
Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy's recovery journey took a new turn this week with a second knee surgery, aimed at addressing swelling that developed during his rehabilitation process.
McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 draft, initially underwent surgery in August after sustaining a torn meniscus during his preseason debut on Aug. 10. The Michigan standout brought an impressive college resume to Minnesota, including 6,226 yards, 49 touchdowns, and a remarkable 27-1 record - the third-best winning percentage in major college football history.
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell addressed reporters Wednesday about McCarthy's latest medical procedure, offering insights into the young quarterback's progress and rehabilitation timeline. The injury's origin remains somewhat mysterious, as neither McCarthy nor the team has been able to pinpoint the exact play where it occurred.
"He's been doing everything we asked of him and improving, getting stronger, all those things, but we just wanted to make sure that there was no cause for concern and all reports were very positive. He's on the original timeline in good shape."
The second procedure involved a biologic injection - a treatment using organic medications often prescribed for conditions that traditional drugs struggle to address effectively. Sources confirmed to ESPN doctors found no additional concerns during the procedure. McCarthy spent most of the first six weeks after his initial Aug. 14 surgery with his leg immobilized.
McCarthy's growth off the field
For McCarthy, the setback has transformed into an opportunity for development. The young quarterback has maintained an active presence in team meetings and on the sidelines, demonstrating his commitment to learning the Vikings' system even while out. In his only public comments about the injury on Sept. 6, McCarthy admitted being "extremely shocked" to learn his rookie season would end before it began.
O'Connell praised McCarthy's engagement during his recovery period.
"He continues to ask great questions every day. I've just enjoyed as his rehab has progressed, he can be in meetings and spend a little bit more time with us."
The Vikings' long-term vision for McCarthy remains unchanged. O'Connell's August statement still rings true.
"We've got our young franchise quarterback, I believe, in the building."
McCarthy's current trajectory makes him the favorite to open the 2025 season as the Vikings' starter. Meanwhile, Sam Darnold has stepped up admirably, starting all nine games this season.
