WATCH: Coltsยด special team run blocked punt all the way for a TD to deliver unexpected lead against Vikings
The Indianapolis Colts rushed into a lead against the Minnesota Vikings in their game on Saturday. The Vikings seem to be handling clinching the NFC North with all the grace of passing a hot potato. After losing the game to the Detroit Lions last week when they could have sewed up the division title, they have started this game slowly as well.
Right in the first quarter, they tripped over multiple times. They let the Colts take a three-point lead. Instead of doing anything to call it back, they messed up on special teams. The Vikings allowed the Colts' special teams to block a punt, which they ran all the way back for a touchdown. JoJo Domann's touchdown was enough to give the Colts a 10-0 lead with not even the first quarter half gone.
Vikings fumbling their chances against the Colts
It wasn't the only thing that the Vikings were messing up today in the first quarter. Minnesota gave the ball to Dalvin Cook, and he had a huge gain on his first carry. Just when they had the ball in a good position, he fumbled the ball on the next carry, which gave the ball back to Indianapolis.
The Colts were not going to give up that chance that easy. Even without their star running back Jonathan Taylor off the pitch and questionable to return, Matt Ryan led the group all the way downfield for another offensive score. The Vikings defense was caught out by a disguised play where the running back started in the backfield before going wide right as a receiver. It certainly bamboozled the Minnesota defense and the Indianapolis Colts could convert on first-and-goal.
Facing a Colts team that has struggled to reach 20 points in most games this season, the Vikings have given up that many points in the first quarter. Their special teams have conceded a touchdown. Their offense has fumbled the ball and given up turnovers in a good position. They also failed to convert a fourth-and-short in the first quarter when they had a chance.
The defense gave up a score on the first opposition drive and then gave up another touchdown and a field goal before the first quarter was up. Across all units, the Colts have dominated the Vikings in the first quarter. Just when the division title was within their grasp, Minnesota seems to be choking for two weeks straight. Even if they make the playoffs, as is likely, their jitters are coming at absolutely the wrong time.
