Damar Hamlin speaks on Comeback Player award

Despite coming back from a heart-stoppage on the field and making an NFL roster in 2023, Damar Hamlin was not awarded the Comeback Player of the Year award. Instead, Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco got it for playing decently well after sitting at home in free agency for half the season.

There was some outcry over that, but Hamlin isn't as concerned. He said via NBC Sports:

“I heard some people were in an uproar. I did at first, I’m not gonna lie. I did, a little bit, just because you know I’m a competitor myself. Any competition you put me in, I want to win. I clapped for Joe as he went on stage and clapped for him as he went off. . . . It wasn’t something that a trophy can define.”

The Comeback Player of the Year Award's loosely defined criteria may have aided this controversy. In the past, it has been players who came back from playing poorly or not playing to play well and players who suffered horrific injuries but returned to action.
