WATCH: Eagles, Steelers players get into massive fight as Week 15 showdown heats up
A Philadelphia Eagles vs. Pittsburgh Steelers game typically showcases gritty competition, regardless of their cities's contrasting reputations. This was certainly the case in Sunday's Week 15 matchup.
It began when tight end Darnell Washington muscled cornerback Darius Slay through the endzone and eventually out of bounds. Displeased, the rest of the Eagles' defense rushed and the field was met by the rest of the Steelers's offense.
At one point, offensive tackle Broderick Jones had to be restrained by Russell Wilson and Pat Freiermuth.
The scuffle can be seen below:
After officials were able to defuse the situation, wideout Calvin Austin was assessed an unnecessary roughness penalty for shoving rookie Cooper DeJean. As a result, the Steelers, within the five before the altercation, were docked 14 yards, pushing them back to within the 20.
Their drive would end in a game-tying field goal for Chris Boswell, who broke the single-season franchise record at 37 (he had also held the previous one). AJ Brown would take the lead back for the Eagles by catching the game's first touchdown from Jalen Hurts.
No scoring plays have occurred in the second quarter so far.
Steelers not intimidated by Eagles fans’ hostile environment, says Cameron Heyward
The Eagles (or Iggles, as they are called in Philadelphia) are known to boast some of the rowdiest fans in the NFL. They famously rioted after their team won Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots, although they were more subdued after witnessing a loss at Super Bowl LVII.
Other notable incidents include pelting Santa Claus with snowballs back in 1968, when they were a bottomfeeder, and booing Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin as he was being treated for what turned out to be a career-ending spinal injury.
But all that rowdiness has not deterred Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward.
"Man, we're in the AFC North. It's always hostile," Heyward said during a presser. "That's never a factor because we're used to playing in hostile environments."
Meanwhile, quarterback Russell Wilson has a career 6-0 record against the team, with all those wins occurring when he was a Seattle Seahawk. During his presser, he said he was aware of it, even though he would instead not think about it.
