WATCH: Jets fans set Drake Maye's jersey on fire ahead of Patriots clash
New York Jets fans are not known for being passionate. At least not in the way that the Bills Mafia and the Las Vegas Raiders fanbases are, but it seems that it might be soon changing.
New York (1-1) is set to face the New England Patriots (1-1) at its MetLife Stadium on Thursday. After opening this season with two road games, Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon, ending his 2023 season in the stadium just four snaps into their opening game against the Buffalo Bills.
In a video that surfaced on social media, Jets fans set on fire a Patriots jersey with the No. 10 on it. No. 10 is New England rookie QB Drake Maye's number. It's the same number he wore in college and chose to carry forward to the NFL.
Many fans recorded the display on their phones while hollering, "J. E. T. S. Jets, Jets, Jets!"
The last time the Jets and Patriots played at MetLife Stadium, the Jets lost 15-10 in September 2023. Will the same thing happen this time, or will the Jets get the better of the Patriots?
Can the Jets beat the Patriots?
Both teams are 1-1 and have mediocre offenses. Pats coach Jerod Mayo will start Jacoby Brissett instead of Drake Maye, and even though he managed to beat the Cincinnati Bengals 16-10 in the season opener, they fell to the Seattle Seahawks 23-20 in overtime on Sunday.
Even though the Jets lost their season opener 32-19 at the San Francisco 49ers, they won 24-17 at the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. But they're also playing their third game in 11 days. Will exhaustion overtake them?
Brissett has failed to produce any explosive plays. However, the same thing can be said for Aaron Rodgers, who analysts have called out for being "rusty" and not mobile.
In what may be a first for Rodgers, he is up against a coach who he played against in 2010. Now, Mayo is on the other side of the sideline, while Rodgers is still on the gridiron.
It looks like an uphill task for the Jets as since 2011, they've only gotten the best of the Pats three times. But things are much different this time around. For starters, the Patriots don't have Tom Brady or Bill Belichick, and the Jets have Aaron Rodgers.
