What did Cierre Wood do? Ex-NFL RB receives life sentence after pleading guilty to murder charge

Former NFL running back Cierre Wood received a life sentence Tuesday after pleading guilty to a murder charge. Wood played in the NFL from 2013 until 2015 and then spent two years in the CFL.

Wood pleaded guilty to the murder of his then-girlfriend's five-year-old daughter in 2019 at his Las Vegas apartment. According to The Associated Press, he reached a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty in April to second-degree murder and felony child abuse.

But on Tuesday, Wood was sentenced to life in prison but was given the possibility of parole after 10 years. The former running back must also serve between 28 months and six years for the child abuse charge.

Along with Wood, the child's mother, Amy Taylor, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony child abuse.

The child died on April 9, 2019, of blunt force injuries, according to Las Vegas' coroner's office.

Cierre Wood's football career

Cierre Wood was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and was listed as the eighth-ranked running back in the nation.

Wood committed to Notre Dame and played for the Fighting Irish from 2009 until 2012. He redshirted his freshman season and was the backup running back in 2010. However, after starter Armando Allen got injured, he started the final six games.

Wood finished his college career with 2,447 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns, adding 384 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Cierre Wood decided to forgo his final college season but went undrafted in the 2013 NFL draft. He ended up signing with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent. However, he was released in October for unspecified violations of team rules prior to a game in Kansas City.

Wood bounced around practice squads and training camp rosters with the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks and Buffalo Bills. He ended up finishing his NFL career with 12 rushing yards.

After recovering from a torn ACL, Wood signed in the CFL. However, he did not appear in a game.
