What did Eagles GM say about Carson Wentz? Howie Roseman compares Jalen Hurts to former QB
Ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl showdown vs. the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend, Eagles GM Howie Roseman took a shot at former Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz.
The team selected Wentz in the first-round of the 2016 NFL draft and then his eventual replacement, Jalen Hurts, in the second-round of the 2020 NFL draft.
General manager Howie Roseman discussed how he selected Hurts as a backup for more depth in the competitive league in the most competitive position.
He took a shot at Wentz this week, saying that he was worried about the team bringing in Hurts and that Wentz probably wasn't their guy because of it.
Roseman said via The Philadelphia Inquirer.:
“You need depth in this league. Why wouldn’t you consider building depth at the most important position of all sports? The league is a competitive league. If you’re worried that we’re bringing in depth and talent, you’re probably not the right guy at that position.”
Wentz led the team to a 11-2 start in 2017, but he tore his ACL and missed the rest of the season. Wentz was never the same after backup quarterback Nick Foles led the team to a Super Bowl victory.
Wentz appeared in 11 games the following season before being sidelined with a back injury that ended his season. He threw for over 4,000 yards and 27 touchdowns the following season, but the team still decided to draft Hurts the following year.
Jalen Hurts has been everything the Eagles have looked for in a quarterback
The Eagles made the right choice by moving on from Carson Wentz and going with Jalen Hurts.
Hurts became a full-time starter during the 2021 season. The team traded Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts prior to the start of the season.
Wentz had a mediocre season, going 9-8 with the Colts in his lone season before being traded to the Commanders the following season and suffering a 2-5 record.
Hurts led the Eagles to the divisional round of the playoffs last season, and then has led them to the Super Bowl this season.
Roseman got it right by replacing Wentz with Hurts.
