What happened to Deebo Samuel? 49ers get more bad news after WR's hospitalization

The San Francisco 49ers are having a major hangover from their Super Bowl appearance. Multiple players have gone down with injuries, the latest being top wideouts Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel.

On Monday, coach Kyle Shanahan said that Samuel had to be rushed to the hospital after contracting pneumonia and having water in his lungs. He had played only a few snaps in the 28-12 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday before being taken off the field. Adam Schefter reported there was no timeline for his return.

Also joining the injury list is star tight end George Kittle, who had a sprained foot and was made day-to-day. He was the team's leading receiver in the aforementioned game, catching six passes for 92 yards.

Another WR, Chris Conley, was also declared day-to-day with an ankle sprain.

One player did play after an injury absence: WR Ricky Pearsall, who made his debut seven weeks after being shot in a failed robbery attempt during the offseason. He caught three passes for 21 yards.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan gives update on Christian McCaffrey's return timetable

Elsewhere, many 49ers fans had been anticipating a grand return for star running back Christian McCaffrey. However, despite an Instagram story tease by his wife, Olivia Culpo, it ultimately did not happen.

Instead, he will likely return in Week 10 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after their bye week. Shanahan said:

"Christian's still progressing through his rehab. He hasn't had any setbacks, so it's been all good news so far. I'd be surprised to get him back this week (against the Dallas Cowboys). But hopefully the bye week will go well and (he will) have a much better chance there right after."

He also provided updates on linebacker Dre Greenlaw and kicker Jake Moody:

"Greenlaw's still a few weeks after that. Everything's still going fine, but no time soon right now. Jake Moody with a high ankle sprain. We know we're not going to get him back until after the bye week at the earliest, so we'll have to wait until then to see how it reacts."

The 49ers will face the Cowboys at 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday.
