What happened to Drake Maye? Patriots QB taken off the field after brutal hit to head vs. Jets

Drake Maye scored a touchdown on the second drive of the game against the New York Jets on Sunday. But later in the contest, New England Patriots hearts skipped a beat when the rookie quarterback took a brutal hit to the head.

He was scrambling with the ball when Jets defender Jamien Sherwood collided with him in a helmet-to-helmet crash. The QB went crashing to the ground with the ball still in his hands.

Soon after the hit, he walked off to the blue medical tent where he was examined. However, he did not return to the field and instead had to leave for the locker room.

The Pats then announced that their starting QB was questionable to return and veteran signal-caller Jacoby Brissett was seen warming up on the sidelines and will be the palycaller till Maye returns.

UPDATE: Maye was ruled out of the game.

The Pats had kicked off the scoreboard, but at the time of writing, the Jets were leading 13-7 with seven minutes left for the first half to end.

Jacoby Brissett welcomed with boos while replacing Drake Maye

No sooner did Brissett take to the gridiron than Patriots fans started booing him from the bleachers. His pass had been intercepted by Rhamondre Stevenson and Patriots fans were understandably frustrated.

Even as they walked into the locker room, fans continued to boo the team for blowing their lead and allowing the Jets to get a touchdown in.

Fans were also upset with the referees officiating the game. Christian Gonzalez was slapped with a pass interference that helped set up a Jets TD. He was hit with the pass on a 3rd and 9 pass.

But when Drake Maye got brutally hit in the head by Sherwood, the referees did not so much as bat an eyelid.

For now, fans are hoping that their rookie QB does not go into concussion protocol which might see him miss up to 4 games this season.
