What happened to Drew Lock? Giants QB sidelined with injury during Lions preseason game

Football can be a cruel sport and nobody knows that better than a veteran quarterback like Drew Lock. He saw firsthand how Geno Smith had to emerge from Russell Wilson's shadow at Seattle, one the former had been put in because injuries derailed his career, and plan his arc of redemption. Then he saw his colleague get injured again, which allowed him to come in and show his worth in winning contributions.

That resulted in him getting a new contract with the Giants, where he was supposed to keep starting quarterback Daniel Jones honest and compete with him. That he had a chance to begin the season was because Jones himself was coming back from a season-ending injury last year. Just when it looked like the universe was lining up for him, came a cruel blow.

While playing against the Giants, he was struggling with coordinating with his new teammates and fans were baying for local boy Tommy DeVito. Instead of getting a chance to ride his own in-game redemption bandwagon, Drew Lock had to leave the game because of a reported hip injury in the first half.

His return was questionable and it allowed DeVito to come in and stake his claim to remain on the Giants roster, arguably at Drew Lock's expense. Luckily, the general manager confirmed later that the injury was not as serious as initially feared and he could have returned to the game but was kept out in an abundance of caution.

Drew Lock injury shines spotlight on Giants OL problems

Drew Lock's injury might have allowed Giants fans the opportunity to see Tommy DeVito in action, as they wanted, but they must be concerned about the state of their offensive line. It is something they have spent many offseasons trying to fix without much success.

In fact, one could argue that Daniel Jones has never played behind an offensive line which has not allowed constant pressure. 2023 was particularly bad as they could not stop pass rush pressures on the quarterback and it eventually led to the Giants quarterback getting injured and having to sit out the rest of the season.

That problem still looks persistent, even though half a football game in preseason is hardly the right time to judge. But it will still be concerning for Brian Daboll. He cannot get into the situation again like last year where he is constantly recirculating through quarterbacks during the regular season. Tommy DeVito returning might warm the cockles of New York fans but it is enough to give the head coach palpitations on the account of an unwanted déjà vu.
