What happened to Russell Gage? WR tries and fails to get up in frightening sight similar to Damar Hamlin's during Cowboys vs. Bucs

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Russell Gage suffered what looked like a serious injury during the fourth quarter of the Monday Night Football game between the Buccaneers and the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Wild Card round.

With the Cowboys up 31-6 with just three minutes remaining, Gage tried to catch a pass from Tom Brady near the end zone. However, as he was tackled by Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson, he tried to get up but couldn't.

The Buccaneers bench emptied as the whole team went to support the receiver.

Gage was removed from the field in a cart. The game was stopped for several minutes before resuming and coming to a close.

Seeing empty benches due to injuries is a scary sight for NFL fans because of Damar Hamlin's collapse just two weeks ago during the game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals. The mouth-watering matchup was canceled as Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest on the field following a routine tackle.

Thankfully, the Bills safety made a quick recovery and is at home after being in critical condition for a week. The Bills and the Bengals will face each other in the AFC Divisional round in what promises to be an emotional game.

Who is Buccaneers receiver Russell Gage?

Gage was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL draft and spent four years with the team. Gage improved every year and became a prominent option for the Falcons offense, especially as Julio Jones left the team and Calvin Ridley was suspended.

He signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Buccaneers in March to join a crowded receiver group that comprised Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and the aforementioned Jones. Establishing himself as WR3, he even had more receiving yards than Jones throughout the season.

The Buccaneers' season came to and following their 31-14 loss to the Cowboys. When Gage was hurt, the game was already decided, which made the situation even worse. While there's no indication about how serious the injury is, the game continuing is a good sign.
