When Donald Trump squandered golden opportunity to buy the Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys are the most valuable sports franchise in the world. As of 2023, they are worth over $8 billion dollars and the franchise's owner Jerry Jones is relishing the success of the risk that he took way back in 1989.

Jones bought the franchise for around $150 million. However, former US President Donald Trump passed on the opportunity to buy the franchise for $50 million in 1983.

Trump later purchased the New Jersey Generals, a USFL franchise. Unfortunately, for Trump, his hopes of owning a professional football team did not survive long, and his team folded after only two years.

Speaking about passing up the opportunity to buy the Cowboys, Donald Trump said:

"I feel sorry for the poor guy who is going to buy the Cowboys ... he'll be known to the world as a loser."
The Dallas Cowboys are the first NFL team worth $8 billion.

Donald Trump nearly bought them for $50M in 1983, but purchased a USFL franchise that folded two years later.

Although Donald Trump is worth over $2 billion, purchasing the Cowboys would have been ideal for his brand. Nevertheless, Jones didn't pass up that opportunity and he is benefiting from it.

Jerry Jones is now worth around $11 billion and is always seen as the face of the most valuable sports franchise in the world. Although the investment has panned out for Jones, at the time not many believed it was a smart decision to invest such money in an NFL franchise.

As for Trump, he is still trying his best to become the President of the US for the second time. He will likely give his competitors a run for their money in the next election.

Dallas Cowboys need to win a Super Bowl soon

Although the Dallas Cowboys are the most valuable sports franchise in the world (and are labeled as 'America's team'), they haven't won a Super Bowl since 1996.

It is a massive disappointment on their part. Quarterback Dak Prescott is always under pressure, and nobody seems certain he is the right man for the job.

Jerry Jones and the Cowboys have experienced heartbreak every season. They are once again in the playoffs this campaign, and it will be interesting to see how they play this time around.

They travel to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round tonight. It will be interesting to see how they get on.
