When Russell Wilson received backlash for promoting Fifty Shades of Grey - "Why are you promoting trash?

Russell Wilson will forever be revered by some as one of the best players in the Seahawks' history. In his decade with the franchise, Wilson experienced a great deal of praise and even backlash for his efforts on the field.

The same could be said for the backlash off the field, especially after seeing the 2015 film Fifty Shades of Grey. Wilson tweeted that he saw the film ahead of its release to the public and noted that he enjoyed it:

Thanks for the early showing of #50ShadesOfGrey late last night..

Great movie.

However, that didn't sit well with some fans as they called out the quarterback for supporting a film they deem is trash. A few others went as far as to question Russell Wilson's faith in supporting the film.

@DangeRussWilson why are you promoting #50shadesoftrash ? I'm surprised.
@DangeRussWilson Don’t proclaim the name of Christ before a lost world and then act as if you have NO knowledge of him whatsoever!
@DangeRussWilson I'm always at a loss when I witness professing "Christians" promote sin.

In the end, the then-Seattle Seahawks star doubled down against the opposition. He stated that Fifty Shades of Grey didn't shake his faith at all:

Saw a movie filmed in the town I call home. Provocative/disturbing no doubt but that does not make me less Faithful.

Have a blessed day! πŸ˜‡

Wilson led the Seahawks to the playoffs in eight of his 10 seasons with the team, including back-to-back Super Bowl appearances, winning one in 2014. The third-round selection in the 2012 NFL Draft started 158 regular-season games for Seattle.

He's the franchise's all-time leader in passing yards (37,059) and touchdowns (292) while ranking fifth in rushing yards (4,689).

Russell Wilson's first season with another franchise was one to forget

Seattle traded its longtime quarterback to the Denver Broncos ahead of last season. The Broncos gave Wilson a five-year, $245 million deal with $165 million guaranteed last September. On the field, the former Seahawks great wasn't playing up to the mega contract.

He threw for 3,524 yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 15 starts last season with Denver. His 16 touchdowns and his 60.5 completion percentage were both career lows. The 11 interceptions mark the fifth time in 11 seasons Russell Wilson had double-digit interceptions in his career.

Wilson was also sacked 55 times, leading the league last season and the second time he was sacked over 50 times.
