Who is the Dolphins’ starting QB vs Jets? Week 18 update on Miami’s QB situation amid Tua Tagovailoa uncertainty

Tua Tagovailoa and Damar Hamlin have suffered two of the most high-profile injuries of the season. Hamlin, of course, is not expected to play this weekend. But what about the Dolphins quarterback?

Weeks after his most recent game against the Green Bay Packers, and with one game left, questions remain as to whether he would play again this season.

According to Andrew Siciliano on Twitter, the answer is now known. Skylar Thompson will be starting the final game of the season as Tagovailoa could not overcome his concussion to play. His backup, Teddy Bridgewater, will also not be playing in the game due to an injury sustained in relief of the quarterback.

It will be the third-string quarterback's opportunity to duplicate Brock Purdy's explosion. As it stands, the 8-8 Miami Dolphins are in eighth place in the AFC and need a win, along with some help, to reach the playoffs. The seventh seed belongs to the division rival New England heading into the weekend.

Will the Miami Dolphins make the playoffs without their starting quarterback?

On 28th November, the team was 8-3 and seemed to be in a position to challenge the Chiefs, Bills, and Bengals for the top seed in the AFC. However, since beating the Houston Texans in Week 12, the team has gone 0-5. Since Tua Tagovailoa took over as the main starter in 2021, the team has been as streaky as any.

Skylar Thompson starts Week 18 for the Dolphins, per Mike McDaniel.

Tua is OUT.

By the middle of 2021, the team had fallen to 1-7. However, at the end of the year, they were 9-8. This year, after an 8-3 start - with a three-game winning streak, three-game losing streak, and a five-game winning streak - the team hit another wall. Now, after a 0-5 run, the team will hope to finish with the same record from last year.

If that happens, there will be two identical records, but two seemingly opposite ways of getting there. The team would have most of the losses starting in the first half of 2021 and in the second half of 2022.

Will the Miami Dolphins somehow finish with a worse record in 2022 than in 2021, despite a 1-7 start in 2021 and a 3-0 start in 2022?
