Who is Sean Desai? Eagles reportedly hire Seahawks assistant head coach as new DC
Sean Desai joins the mill of coaching moves around the NFL that continues to turn thick and fast. The former Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach has now been hired by the Philadelphia Eagles as their new defensive coordinator.
After Jonathan Gannon was chosen as the Indianapolis Colts' head coach, the Eagles needed to find a replacement and thus the search led them to Desai.
Desai was part of a defensive setup in Seattle that had a 9-8 record en route to making a playoff appearance. The Seahawks' defense wasn't the team's best unit, as they gave up an average of 23.6 points per game (25th in the NFL).
The Seahawks have been known to have decent defensive units since Pete Carroll took over, with the Legion of Boom being the most noteworthy. But over the last few years, as star players have moved on, Seattle has slowly lost that fear factor.
With Sean Desai now moving on, Seattle will need to begin the search for his replacement.
Sean Desai's coaching career: Which NFL teams has he coached?
The 39-year-old has coached his fair share of teams throughout his football journey. The list includes college teams:
- Temple (2006-2010), defensive and special teams coach
- Florida (2011), assistant director of player operations
- Boston College, running backs coach and special teams coordinator
From there, Sean Desai transitioned into the NFL coaching ranks. He began in Chicago as a defensive quality control coach from 2013 to 2018. He then switched titles and became the safeties coach in 2019 before making the move up to defensive coordinator for the Bears in 2021.
As mentioned above, he was with the Seahawks last season as an associate head coach and defensive assistant. Now, he moves to Philadelphia to become their new defensive coordinator.
What is Sean Desai's coaching record in NFL?
Given that Desai hasn't been a head coach in the NFL, it is not really by wins or losses that he is judged, more so by the performance of his units.
Profootballhistory.com still does the math on his coaching record, but it only covers his NFL coaching journey.
So aside from a good year with Chicago in 2018, it is largely underwhelming, but Desai isn't responsible for most of the Bears' shortcomings.
The next phase begins with the Eagles and we imagine that given their talent, his coaching record will get a major boost.
