Who will be the Raiders' starting QB vs. 49ers in Week 17 on Sunday? Details about Derek Carr's replacement

Today marks the end of an era for the Las Vegas Raiders. Franchise quarterback Derek Carr won't play or be with the team on the sidelines at the Allegiant Stadium for their Week 17 game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Las Vegas announced this week that Carr will be benched for the team's final two games of the regular season and will likely be traded or released in the offseason. Former New England Patriots quarterback Jarrett Stidham will start for the outfit.

The decision to bench Carr came after the Raiders' 13-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 16. Carr completed only 16 of his 30 pass attempts for 174 yards and one touchdown with three interceptions.

Carr had started 91 consecutive regular-season games for the Raiders -- the second-longest active streak in the NFL. Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady leads the way with 108 (60 for the New England Patriots).

Jarrett Stidham career: QB to get first career start vs. 49ers in Week 17 for Raiders

The Patriots drafted Jarrett Stidham with the 133rd overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft. Stidham featured in eight games in three seasons for New England and attempted only 48 passes. He completed 24 for 270 yards and two touchdowns with four interceptions.

Stidham joined the Raiders after Josh McDaniels left the Patriots to take over as Las Vegas' head coach. He has featured in three games for the team and has attempted 13 passes. He completed eight for 72 yards.

Stidham's first career NFL start couldn't have come against a tougher opponent. The vaunted 49ers' defense has given up only 15.3 points per game in the 2022 season, the lowest mark in the league.

Las Vegas are 6-9 and can mathematically make the playoffs, but realistically, their season is over. They will be looking to deliver a couple of good performances in their last two games of the season and will evaluate whether Stidham can be the team's starting quarterback in 2023.
