Why is Baker Mayfield suing his father's company? Bucs QB launches $12,000,000 lawsuit
Baker Mayfield is involved in a dispute with his family, and a lawsuit is now involved on the matter. His father's company, Camwood Capital Management Group, failed to comply with the terms of a settlement agreement between the company and the quarterback, the lawsuit says.
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court on Nov. 22. More than a year ago, attorneys from Mayfield's side asked for Camwood's financial records from 2018 to 2023 to understand what happened with the money. Mayfield and Camwood reached a confidential settlement in January 2024.
Camwood is owned by James W. Mayfield, the father of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback. Baker's brother, Matt, also holds a stake in the company. KXAN had access to the lawsuit filed by the quarterback's attorneys:
"To date, Camwood Capital has not repaid even one dollar under the Settlement Agreement, Defendants have failed to refinance their existing loan, and Defendants have not provided Plaintiffs with access to their books and records. As a result, Plaintiffs have been left with no choice but to file suit for breach of the Settlement Agreement to recover the assets improperly taken from them.”
The lawsuit obtained by KXAN says that the quarterback had $12.2 million transferred from him to the defendants between the period from 2018 to 2021. Although he did not receive any equity or stake in the company, the money was used as a primary source of funding for some of Camwood's subsidiaries.
He's seeking "no less than $11.74 million plus interest, costs and attorney fees," along with "any other relief that the Court deems just and proper." He signed a three-year, $100 million extension with the Buccaneers prior to the 2024 season.
Baker Mayfield's 2024 stats
The quarterback has improved once again, with 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 11 games. He's having career-high seasons in completion percentage (71.4%) and touchdown percentage (6.4%).
Baker has lost wide receiver Chris Godwin for the remainder of the season, while superstar Mike Evans was also out for four games. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won on Sunday, and with a 5-6 record, are just one game behind in the NFC South fight, as the Atlanta Falcons are 6-5.
