Why is Dwayne Haskins’ wife being sued? Controversy erupts over late NFL star's ashes
The widow of late NFL star Dwayne Haskins Jr., Kalabrya Gondrezick, has been sued by the quarterback's family. Haskins died in an accident in Florida on Apr. 9, 2022. More than two years after his death, Gondrezick is now facing legal trouble with her in-laws.
According to a report from DailyMail, Haskins' family has filed a lawsuit against Gondrezick, claiming that she has refused to return the late quarterback's ashes to them. Additionally, the family has reported harassment from Gondrezick. According to the publication, the family reported having:
"Experienced constant harassment from the defendant [Haskins' widow] whenever they have attempted to reference his name, image, and likeness in public forums such as social media."
The lawsuit also included a specific complaint from Haskins Jr.'s father, who reported having his Instagram account removed due to his biological resemblance to his late son and the fact that they share the same name. According to Daily Mail, the report said:
"This decision was made despite the fact that Dwayne Haskins Sr. simply shares the same name as his famous son but has not otherwise posted any content on Instagram."
Interestingly, it's not the first time that the family has filed a lawsuit against Haskins Jr.'s wife.
Kalabrya Gondrezick was previously sued for Dwayne Haskins Jr.'s NIL rights
In August, sports law reporter Jason Morrin reported that Dwayne Haskins Jr.'s parents and her sister had sued his wife Kalabrya Gondrezick for harassment. The family's lawsuit highlighted complaints of harassment from Gondrezick over the late quarterback's NIL right.
"Specifically, plaintiffs claim that Kalabrya challenged the establishment of the Haskins Family Foundation Inc. and successfully requested disablement of the Instagram social media accounts of Dwayne Haskins, Sr., Tamia Haskins, and the Haskins Family Foundation Inc," Jason Morrin said via X.
"Plaintiffs, through legal counsel, sent a cease and desist letter to defendant's counsel on June 6, 2024, but state they have not been given requested assurances. Plaintiffs claim that the defendant has misinterpreted Pennsylvania’s Right of Publicity statute," Morrin further added.
Kalabrya Gondrezick is a former athlete, having a college basketball career at Michigan State during the 2015-16 season. When Haskins Jr. was alive, his wife once had to face legal charges for domestic violence.
