Why is Lamar Jackson fighting legal battle against Troy Aikman? Attorney outlines dispute between QBs
Lamar Jackson has reportedly gotten involved in a legal battle with legendary NFL quarterback Troy Aikman. The reigning NFL MVP is apparently blocking the former Cowboys star's attempt to register a trademark for “EIGHT” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Jackson already owns multiple trademarks that include the number "8," and if Aikman registers his trademark for the word "EIGHT," it could cause problems for both brands. Famous trademark attorney Josh Gerben recently highlighted the issue on X, formerly known as Twitter.
As per Gerben, the main issue between the two quarterbacks is:
"Jackson has filed multiple trademarks for the number '8' as it relates to clothing and athletic bags, giving him superior rights in the mark."
He added:
"If registered, Aikman's 'EIGHT' trademark will cause consumer confusion with Jackson's '8' trademarks."
Gerben further wrote:
"It is highly unusual for two famous quarterbacks, who both wore the same number, to end up in a trademark battle. But to Jackson's credit, he was filing trademarks with the USPTO long before Aikman."
As per Gerben Law, some of the trademarks filed by Jackson include:
- YOU 8 YET?
- PLAY ACTION SOULFOOD AND MORE YOU 8 YET?
- ERA 8
- ERA 8 BY LAMAR JACKSON
Throughout his legendary NFL career, Troy Aikman wore jersey No. 8, but since he has waited so long to file trademarks related to it, things have tilted in favor of Jackson.
Lamar Jackson's contract details
Lamar Jackson signed a five-year, $260 million contract extension with the Baltimore Ravens last year. He repaid the franchise by winning the second MVP award of his career in 2023 and also led the Ravens to the best record in the AFC.
Although the franchise didn't make the Super Bowl, the future is bright for the Ravens, and Jackson's promise of delivering them a championship might turn into reality pretty soon.
Lamar Jackson is on the trajectory to get inducted into the Hall of Fame
Lamar Jackson is just 27 years old. He has already won two MVPs, made the Pro Bowl three times and been named to the All-Pro team twice in his career. He is undeniably the second-most decorated quarterback of this generation, behind Patrick Mahomes.
In 86 games for the Ravens across six seasons, Jackson has thrown for 15,887 yards, 125 touchdowns and 45 interceptions for a passer rating of 98. He has also rushed for 5,258 yards and 29 touchdowns on 875 carries, averaging 6.0 yards per carry.
Jackson's career is on a Hall of Fame trajectory, and all he needs to secure a spot in Canton is to win a Super Bowl. The Ravens are well positioned to be one of the Kansas City Chiefs' biggest obstacles in their bid to three-peat as Super Bowl champions this year.
