‘‘Why does that make such a big deal?’’ - Tom Brady never wanted his friendship with Donald Trump to take center stage

The friendship between Tom Brady and former US president Donald Trump is an unexpected one.

The two have often been linked together, either over the deflategate scandal or a round of golf. The star QB, though, does not think that his friendship with the former POTUS is too big a deal.

Of course, not many NFL athletes can say they're friends with Trump, but not many athletes are like Tom Brady.

While their relationship might not be the same today, it began when Brady was young and a legend in the making. Trump has spoken of Brady, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB has been asked about Trump time and again.

In an old 2017 interview, Brady talked about the same. The 45-year-old was bemused that people made a big deal about his friendship with Trump.

‘‘Why does that make such a big deal?’’ Brady said. ‘‘I don’t understand it.’I have called him, yes, in the past. Sometimes he calls me. Sometimes I call. But, again, that’s been someone I’ve known. I always try to keep it in context because for 16 years you know someone before maybe he was in the position that he was in".

Brady continued by adding that Trump is supportive of him and is one of the friends he calls. He said:

"It’s just a friendship. I have a lot of friends. I call a lot of people.”

Apparently, Brady and Trump's connection began with a round of golf. It was Trump who invited Brady to play, and the latter was excited about the opportunity

"I was so young. I got to go to a private golf course. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world," Brady told Variety.

Brady explained that he hasn't spoken to Trump in years, and their entire relationship is mischaracterized.

Brady's love for golf is no secret, as the QB is often interested and involved in PGA Tour events. He was a part of The Match VI in June, where Brady and Aaron Rodgers beat Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen by one hole.
