Why did Packers suspend Romeo Doubs? GM Brian Gutekunst explains reason behind WR's Week 5 suspension
The Green Bay Packers have suspended wide receiver Romeo Doubs just before the Week 5 matchup against the LA Rams. Doubs has been suspended one game for conduct detrimental to the team, initial reports said.
Packers GM Brian Gutekunst shed light on this decision, explaining that Doubs' actions impacted the team negatively this week.
"Unfortunately, we had to make the difficult decision to suspend Romeo for this week’s game. His decisions and actions during the week negatively impacted the team and required us to take this action."
Gutenkunst remains hopeful that this is a one-time thing and Doubs will get things back on track soon.
"While we are certainly disappointed, we are confident that we will be able to move forward in a positive manner. Romeo is a valuable member of our team and we look forward to welcoming him back next week," he said, via Tom Silverstein.
Romeo was at practice on Wednesday, but was absent on Thursday and Friday due to 'personal reasons.' Doubs is now on the suspended list ahead of an entertaining duel against the LA Rams at SoFi Stadium.
Romeo Doubs has collected the second-most receiving yards (169) and receptions (12) on the Packers, trailing Jayden Reed in both categories. He's yet to score this season, but this Sunday won't be the day he ends that streak.
How did Romeo Doubs fare in Week 4?
Romeo Doubs' latest outing came against divisional rival Minnesota Vikings in a hard-fought 31-29 win. He didn't have the most spectacular numbers, only catching four passes on eight targets for 39 receiving yards.
He had a solid start to the season, catching four passes for 50 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1 and then tallying 62 receiving yards on three receptions in Week 2. The Titans slowed him down in Week 3 with only one reception for 18 yards.
The Packers rank third in the NFC North division after four games. They are still in contention for this division and the 2024 NFL playoffs, but they need all their weapons available to compete. Jordan Love is back in action and showed that his 2023 campaign wasn't a fluke. If Doubs returns and stays away from problems, the Packers will have a chance to improve what they did last season.
Without Doubs on the field, Malik Heath or Dontayvion Wicks could step in for him.
