Why didn't Raiders hire Kliff Kingsbury? NFL insider reveals why offseason negotiations broke down for Commanders OC
Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is finding a lot of success in his second coaching stint in the NFL. Kingsbury was the Arizona Cardinals head coach from 2019-2022 and was let go after just one playoff season and one winning season as their coach.
Kingsbury worked with the USC Trojans the following year in 2023 as their offensive analyst before deciding to coach in the NFL again.
In his second coaching stint in the NFL, Kingsbury was hired by the Commanders as their new offensive coordinator, joining new coach Dan Quinn's coaching staff. There were reports before Kingsbury accepted the job that he was in talks for the same role with the Las Vegas Raiders.
According to NFL reporter Albert Breer on Monday, the Raiders wouldn't add a third year to Kingsbury's contract, which stalled negotiations, allowing the Commanders to swoop in and hire him.
"The Raiders wouldn’t go to a third year on an OC contract for Kliff Kingsbury, and the stall in negotiations opened the door for the Commanders to swoop in and steal him. Chip Kelly was also in the running for the Vegas job," Breer tweeted.
Washington has reaped the benefits of having Kingsbury on its coaching staff. He's been the perfect mentor for rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.
From Weeks 2 to 4, Washington's offense scored on 16 consecutive drives and only punted four times in its first four games. By Week 5, Washington's offense had scored more points with a rookie QB since 1970.
Las Vegas Raiders have fired their offensive coordinator Luke Getsy
Following the Las Vegas Raiders' 41-24 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, the team relieved offensive coordinator Luke Getsy on Sunday night. Getsy joined the Raiders' coaching staff this offseason after coming over from the Chicago Bears, serving as their offensive coordinator from 2022-2023.
Las Vegas has struggled offensively all season. As a team, it ranks last in rushing yards (76.9), 29th in total yards (280.2) and 26th in points scored (18.7) per game.
In the matchup against the Bengals yesterday, quarterback Garnder Minshew was once again benched, this time for newly acquired Desmond Ridder.
Heading into Week 11 (Las Vegas has a bye this week), the Raiders could be with a new starting quarterback and new offensive play-caller, two signs that their season isn't going well.
