Will Jordan Love start for Packers in the 2023 NFL season? Packers star's time as Aaron Rodgers' backup seems to be over

Are the Green Bay Packers ready to move on from Aaron Rodgers and finally give Jordan Love a chance?

The team's general manager Brian Gutekunst spoke to the media on Tuesday morning at the NFL Combine and said that he has been in constant communication with Love about what is next for the quarterback.

As reported by FOX Sports' Ralph Vacchiano, he said that Love is eager to play and that the quarterback has told them that he wants to play next season.

QB Jordan Love is “eager” to become the Packers starting QB, Gutekunst said, and he’s told management he’s ready to play and wants to start next year.

Gutekunst agreed that the 24 year old has to play next season because that is the next step in his career. He also said that he has complete confidence in Love being a successful starting quarterback in the National Football League.

This all but makes it official that the Green Bay Packers will have a change of guard at quarterback next season. He said:

“He has to play. That’s the next step for him.”
Gutekunst had some high praise for Rodgers’ backup, Jordan Love. Then he added “He has to play. That’s the next step for him.”

When asked if he had spoken with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Gutekunst said that he hasn't had the opportunity to do so yet, but plans to in the near future.

If QB Jordan Love starts, what does that mean for Aaron Rodgers?

Aaron Rodgers completed his darkness retreat last week and was expected to speak with the Green Bay Packers in regards to his future. As GM Brian Gutekunst told the media on Tuesday morning, he is yet to speak with the former NFL MVP.

But, as he puts his confidence in Jordan Love, what does that mean for Rodgers?

Gutekunst said that he hopes and wants to speak with Rodgers before the free agency period begins on March 15, 2023. But since there hasn't been any communication between the quarterback and the Green Bay Packers, all options are on the table.

He said:

“He’s a great player, but until we have those conversations, I think all options are on the table. We need to have those conversations. We want what’s best for the Green Bay Packers, what’s best for him so we’ll get to that coming up.”

Aaron Rodgers was said to be using his time in the darkness retreat so that he could decide what was next in his life. Whether that meant retirement or perhaps a trade out of Green Bay. Until the quarterback has that discussion and makes his decision, the Packers are stuck in the same place.
