Will Patriots target Jordan Poyer in free agency? NFL insider tips Bill Belichick to make big moves
The New England Patriots are in need of a bit of help to get back into the playoffs. Bill Belichick's squad missed the postseason just barely last season, so this is a big off-season for them.
There are a lot of impact free agents available, and one NFL insider believes that the team could go after a division rival in Jordan Poyer.
Poyer has spent the last six seasons in Buffalo with the Bills, but Matt Bowen of ESPN said Belichick might go after him:
"Poyer's multidimensional traits fit with Bill Belichick's scheme as a movable defensive player with deep-field range. Veteran safety Devin McCourty is set to hit free agency, so there is a need here."
He continued:
"A highly instinctual defensive back, Poyer could match in coverage, check tight ends or track the ball from post/deep-half alignments in New England. And he can play multiple roles in Belichick's sub-packages. Last season, Poyer logged four interceptions and eight pass breakups for the Bills."
Poyer has been a quality safety, making the Pro Bowl this season and being an All-Pro last season. Belichick has always been about having a good defense, and Poyer could be a key contributor to that.
What other free agents could the Patriots target?
The New England Patriots have more needs than just a safety, though. Bills star Poyer will be a nice addition to whichever team he ends up with, but the Patriots are looking at more than just him.
Bowen believes offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor could be a good fit:
"He can also fill a major need for Bill O'Brien's offense in New England, slotting in at right tackle position where Isaiah Wynn and Marcus Cannon are both headed to free agency."
The team may also be interested in re-signing wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, his crucial blunder against the Las Vegas Raiders notwithstanding. Given how this season went, it wouldn't be a big surprise if Belichick's squad looked significantly different next year.
Could that be because of someone like Jordan Poyer? Time will tell, but it certainly looks like it could be a good move for them.
