Will Saints ditch Davante Adams chase after Derek Carr's injury? NFL insider gives clarity
The New Orleans Saints suffered a double blow on "Monday Night Football," as they not only lost 26-13 to the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium but quarterback Derek Carr also picked up an oblique injury that is reportedly set to sideline him for weeks.
The veteran suffered the injury on a desperate 4th-and-8 play in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs called an all-out blitz, but Carr managed to throw a near-perfect pass to wide receiver Mason Tipton, who couldn't haul it in. To make matters worse, the quarterback landed hard on his side and immediately clutched his oblique area before gingerly walking off the field.
Concerns emerged that the 33-year-old's injury could not only derail the Saints' sinking season but also force them to end their pursuit of Las Vegas Raiders superstar Davante Adams. New Orleans is reportedly among the teams vying to sign the 31-year-old, but Carr's injury prompted speculation that the team would abandon its quest to land the six-time Pro Bowler.
However, NFL insider Josina Anderson reported that the team remains steadfast in their desire to trade for Adams. In an update on X, she wrote:
"My understanding is that Carr’s recent injury does not necessarily impact New Orleans’ interest in continuing trade discussions for Davante Adams. The sentiment now is that interest is contingent on Adams’ current evaluations of his prospect teams given the outcome of Week 5 games."
The Raiders are demanding a second-round pick and other compensations for the wide receiver. While Las Vegas has reportedly had conversations with several teams, none has met their asking price. However, one team is the presumptive frontrunner to land the veteran.
Davante Adams trade news: Jets remain WR's most likely landing spot
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Davante Adams' preferred landing spot is the New York Jets, where he could reunite with former teammate Aaron Rodgers. The wide receiver is keen on joining the team and helping flip the franchise's fortunes.
However, Rapoport added that he'd also be open to playing for the New Orleans Saints, Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers should a move to the Jets not materialize.
His desire to move to New York hasn't deterred the Saints. During an appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show" earlier this week, the insider reported that New Orleans has been the "most aggressive" team in trying to win the Davante Adams sweepstakes. It remains to be seen where the veteran eventually lands.
