“You need a little Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice back”: Cam Newton throws weight behind Stefon Diggs after fight vs Packers
Stefon Diggs got into a verbal and then physical altercation against members of the Green Bay Packers last Sunday. The game hadn't even started yet and Diggs was already involved in a scuffle against their opponents.
The clips of the altercation brought back an old-school vibe for former NFL quarterback Cam Newton. On Friday's episode of his "4th and 1 Show," Newton watched some of the clips and said that he loved what he saw.
“I f**king love it, man,” Newton said.
“I love that sh**. We need this for the sport.”
Newton added that it reminded him of Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice back in the day and that the "villain" role would bring more viewers to the National Football League.
“We love to see it," Newton said. "We love rivalries. Ol Andre Rison and Deion Sanders. You need a little Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice back. All that friendly shit. We need this for the sport. Villains turn to viewership.”
It's unclear what was said to Stefon Diggs, but players from both sides had to be separated and sent to their sides of the field to conclude pregame warmups.
Stefon Diggs addressed pregame altercation vs. Packers
Stefon Diggs and the Houston Texans lost the Week 7 matchup to the Green Bay Packers 24-22, and after the game, the wide receiver addressed the pregame altercation. Diggs didn't downplay what happened on the field and said that someone began taking jabs at him and that he's not the type of person who just ignores it.
“I was walking to the locker room at the beginning of the game and I heard somebody chirping,” Diggs said. “I’m never the bigger person,” Diggs said.
He went on to say that he isn't the one who just backs down.
“I ain’t letting s** go,” Diggs said. “I don’t (care) if I’m by myself or with a million people. “ ... I ain’t with the football tough guy (stuff).”
Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander appeared to have caused the start of the fight. Alexander and Diggs already exchanged jabs in the past and it was not shocking to many that they were involved in another verbal altercation.
