NFL coaching carousel could lead to major Cowboys coaching change despite Jerry Jones’ best efforts

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has made it perfectly clear that he fully intends to keep his coordinators with the franchise, despite much interest from other NFL teams potentially inquiring about each of them becoming head coaches. He specifically mentioned defensive coordinator Dan Quinn during a recent radio interview with The FAN:

"We obviously did everything we could to keep Dan last year and we feel the same way about it this year.”

Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore have each received interest in the past to become the head coach of a different team. Many teams inquired about Quinn during the 2022 NFL offseason, but Jerry Jones did everything in his power to keep him with the Cowboys. Quinn is considered one of the best defensive coaches in the entire NFL.

Quinn has helped transform the Cowboys' defense from one of the worst in the league to one of the best. He replaced Mike Nolan as the defensive coordinator before the start of the 2021 NFL season, so in less than two years, he has helped them switch from being a liability to a strength of the team. This is one of the main reasons he has received interest in other teams' head coaching openings.

Before signing with the Dallas Cowboys in 2021, Dan Quinn established a proven history of success. He was the defensive coordinator for the infamous Legion of Boom defense with the Seattle Seahawks. He helped them appear in two Super Bowls and win a ring. He also served as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, making another Super Bowl appearance.

It makes sense why other NFL teams would be interested in hiring Quinn to be their next head coach. Jerry Jones has clearly stated that he would do everything in his power not to allow that to happen. This implies that he may even be willing to promote Dan Quinn to the head coach of the Cowboys if that's what it takes to keep him in Dallas.

Could Jerry Jones replace Mike McCarthy with Dan Quinn as Dallas Cowboys HC?

If Dan Quinn desires to be a head coach for the 2023 NFL season, it may leave Jerry Jones with a difficult decision. He may be forced to either let him go or fire Mike McCarthy and replace him with Quinn as the head coach. This is potentially a realistic option for Jerry Jones, as he claims he will do whatever it takes to keep Quinn with the Cowboys.

McCarthy could be in the hot seat following the 2022 NFL season. He was hired to take the Cowboys to the next level and hasn't lived up to expectations. He replaced Jason Garrett, who helped the Cowboys become annual NFL playoff contenders. McCarthy was hired to help elevate the team to a Super Bowl contender, as he did with the Green Bay Packers.

The Cowboys lost to the San Francisco 49ers during the NFL Playoffs last year. Another early exit this year could potentially jeopardize McCarthy's job security. Jerry Jones has made it known that he believes this Cowboys team is good enough to win a Super Bowl. If McCarthy cannot help the Cowboys advance further this year, Jerry Jones may offer Quinn a shot at the position.
