NFL Draft expert outlines downside to “Patrick Mahomes-type” prospect

Patrick Mahomes is the quarterback that most NFL prospects want to be compared to. One draft analyst thinks there's a quarterback similar to Mahomes in the upcoming 2023 draft. On the show Get Up, ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay thinks Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young is a smaller version of Mahomes.

However, McShay commented that there's a possible downside to Young. He thinks that his health could be a concern for NFL teams, using Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as an example.

McShay said:

"I think he plays the game so under control. It is so slow to him. He understands, to me, that he's a smaller Patrick Mahomes. But if you're sitting there, number one or you're trying to trade up to get him, the only concern you have is, is he going to be on the field? You know, can we keep him on the field or is it going to be a Tua Tagovailoa type of situation."

While Patrick Mahomes had a standout college career at Texas Tech, Young probably had an even better one with the Crimson Tide. In his sophomore season, the Alabama star finished second in all of college football, throwing for 4,872 yards and 47 touchdowns.

He took home the Heisman Trophy that season along with the AP Player of the Year award.

In his final season at Alabama, Young was in the top 10 in college football with 32 touchdowns while throwing for 3,328 yards. The 5'10'' quarterback passed up on his senior season to enter the draft and could find himself taken early come April.

Could Bryce Young be the next Patrick Mahomes?

Bryce Young will likely be the first quarterback taken in the 2023 draft as he plays bigger than his small frame. Young can make all of the throws like fans have seen Patrick Mahomes do with the Kansas City Chiefs. Like the two-time NFL MVP, Young can extend a play with his feet if necessary.

The 2021 SEC Offensive Player of the Year has proven that he can be that franchise quarterback at the next level. We'll see which team takes him and how early he'll go as he looks to win more awards in his football career.
