NFL Honors: When Tom Brady was mercilessly roasted for endorsing “rich, white guy products”
Tom Brady hasn't attended many NFL Honors events over the years, simply because he was typically playing in the Super Bowl the next day.
In 2017, the night before the quarterback would try to win his fifth Lombardi Trophy, NFL Honors host comedian Keegan-Michael Key roasted Brady. He targeted the then-New England Patriots quarterback for the products that he chose to endorse.
Key said that he appreciated the fact that the quarterback now embraces his image and endorses products that "rich white guys" can afford. Here's how he put it:
"Tom Brady will go for his fifth Super Bowl ring tomorrow. And after the suspension, I'm pretty sure I know what finger he'll wear it on.
"I like how Tom Brady finally embraced his image and now only endorses weird, rich, white guy products. Like $4,000 mattresses and cybernetic pajamas. I hear this year, he's endorsing a "Find my island app". He's rich I tell ya'. He's rich."
Tom Brady, of course, wasn't there at the ceremony to respond. But the very next day, the quarterback would go on to win his fifth Super Bowl in a match that is now known as the 28-3 game. Against the Atlanta Falcons, Brady brought the New England Patriots back from the largest deficit in Super Bowl history.
Tom Brady sets record straight in regards to his relationship with Bill Belichick
On this week's episode of the "Let's Go" podcast, Tom Brady and Jim Gray welcomed New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick as their guest. This gave the former quarterback and his former head coach the opportunity to clear the air on the rumors about their relationship.
When he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after 20 seasons with New England, rumors that there was turbulence between them circulated. Brady said that's not the case at all. That he and Bill Belichick each had their own jobs and that they relied on each other to take care of business.
“In my view, people were always trying to pull us apart. I don’t think we ever felt like that with each other. We never were trying to pull each other apart. We actually were always trying to go in the same direction.
"When we were in New England for 20 years together, they get tired of writing the same story. So, once they write all the nice things and championships, and then they just start going, ‘Well this works, let’s start trying to divide them.’ I never really appreciated those ways that people would try to do that. He and I always had a great relationship.”
Tom Brady went on to say that the narrative that he and Belichick didn't get along was one that he was unhappy about because that was never the case. He said that he feels that some started saying that because they were just tired of them constantly winning.
