NFL MVP Race featuring Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts

The NFL MVP race is heating up with Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts thought to be at the front of the queue. As most of us know, the MVP award is a quarterback award (without it being a quarterback award).

Since 2006, only two non-quarterbacks have won the award. Those being Adrian Peterson (2012) and LaDainian Tomlinson (2006).

Aside from those two, every other winner has been a quarterback. It is perhaps the most important position in football, which is why the scale is tipped heavily in the quarterback's favor. Not even Cooper Kupp's Triple Crown campaign last season was enough to make him a contender.

But without further ado, let's look at the top five frontrunners in the 2022 NFL MVP race.

#5 - Lamar Jackson

It is hard to believe that Jackson is in just his fifth NFL season, having already won the MVP award before. In 10 games this season, Jackson has guided the Baltimore Ravens to a 7-3 record and an AFC North lead.

Jackson has thrown for 16 touchdowns, 1,977 yards, and just seven interceptions this year. He has also rushed for 666 yards and three touchdowns.

#4 - Tua Tagovailoa

Coming in at number four in the NFL MVP race is Tua Tagovailoa. The spotlight was bright on him at the start of the preseason with the addition of Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins.

Tagovailoa has played eight games in 2022 and has led the Dolphins to a 7-1 record. He has thrown for 2,265 yards, 18 touchdowns, and just three interceptions - earning him the No. 4 spot.

#3 - Josh Allen

Josh Allen has slid to number three in the NFL MVP race. After having the Buffalo Bills sit nicely at 6-1, the Bills lost back-to-back games against the New York Jets and the Minnesota Vikings.

Still, Allen, as usual, has been productive. He has thrown for 2,930 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, leading the Bills to a 7-3 record.

#2 - Jalen Hurts

What a season for Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles. Having guided his team to a 9-1 record, Hurts comes in at number two in the NFL MVP race. After starting 8-0, the Eagles have wobbled of late.

Nonetheless, a season that has seen Hurts throw for 2,407 yards,15 touchdowns, and just three interceptions has him sitting second on the MVP list.

#1 - Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes is the NFL MVP race leader by a country mile. The Kansas City Chiefs star has once again been superb this season. He has led his team to an 8-2 record as he gears up for another Super Bowl run.

Mahomes has thrown for an astonishing 3,266 yards, 28 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions.
