NFL Rumors: Jets have made up their mind regarding Zach Wilson's future with franchise
Zach Wilson's sophomore season in the NFL hasn't gone the way that he and the New York Jets expected. With rumors swirling around his future with the franchise, head coach Robert Saleh made it clear. When asked about Wilson, Saleh made it known that the quarterback is in the Jets' future come next season.
Here's what Saleh said after last week's loss to the Jaguars:
"We're not going to quit on him."
But Saleh's words are in line with the organization's, as the franchise's plans going into the upcoming offseason will be a reflection of that. Per sources, Jets general manager Joe Douglas has no plans on trading Wilson this offseason. The team sees Wilson as a hard worker, a solid teammate, and very bright.
The second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft has handled his demotions well and kept working. No one can predict the future, and the NFL offseason always has its fair share of surprises. Yet, retaining Wilson for next season is the plan and it makes a lot of sense for the Jets.
Douglas and Saleh were on board with selecting Zach Wilson as their top pick in 2021. The former BYU star has had many obstacles, including battling accuracy issues and a number of badly timed injuries that have hindered his development. This season, it has been his overall erratic play.
Zach Wilson's 2022 season has been one to forget
Wilson suffered a knee meniscus tear in the preseason and missed the first three games of the regular season. He returned as the starter in Week 4 and started the next six games. However, the downfall started following a press conference after the Jets 10 - 3 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 11. When asked if the offense let down the defense, Zach Wilson simply said "no."
The following week, Saleh made the move to Mike White to replace Wilson as the team's starter. Wilson started for White, who was dealing with three cracked ribs, versus the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 16. Wilson threw for 92 yards and an interception before quarterback Chris Streveler entered the game.
In nine games, Wilson has thrown for 1,688 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions.
The 23-year-old is inactive for the Jets' Week 17 game versus the Seattle Seahawks as White is the starter once again. Zach Wilson's 2022 - 2023 season seems to be over as the New York Jets fight on in an attempt to make the playoffs.
