NFL vs XFL: Dwayne Johnson’s league dumping controversial rule plaguing NFL for years

The XFL and USFL have introduced a new rule that will have important implications for the game of football. This rule states that if a ball carrier fumbles into the end zone and it goes out of bounds, or if the ball is fumbled into the pylon, possession of the ball will revert back to the spot of the fumble.

Previously, possession would change, with a touchback given to the other team. Now, the team that fumbled gets rewarded by being able to keep possession (and be in position to score).

This could have major implications for football, as it could revolutionize the way teams approach their offensive game plans. This could open the door for teams to become more aggressive in their strategies, as well as provide more exciting plays for both the viewers and players. Ultimately, this rule could make the game more competitive and enjoyable for everyone involved.

The positive aspects of this rule change for the XFL and USFL are numerous. It rewards the offense for a fumble, as possession of the ball will revert back to the spot of the fumble. It also encourages ball carriers to reach for the end zone in order to attempt to score, as there is now a fallback option in the event of a fumble out of bounds. Finally, this new rule provides a laboratory for the NFL to consider repealing the often-criticized rule from their rulebook.

For decades, the NFL has adhered to strict rules regarding possession of a ball fumbled into the end zone. If a player attempts to score a touchdown, but fumbles before reaching the goal line, the ball is awarded to the defending team.

This was demonstrated in Super Bowl XXVII when Dallas Cowboys defensive end Leon Lett attempted to return a Bills fumble for a touchdown but was stripped by Bills receiver Don Beebe. The ball rolled into the end zone before going out of bounds and was awarded to the Bills, who received the ball back at their own 20-yard line.

Recently, the rule has been called into question, with many fans and players deeming it "the worst rule ever." The NFL's Competition Committee has not taken any serious action regarding the modification of the rule.

However, the two spring leagues, the XFL and USFL, have created a new rule for their 2023 seasons that gives the ball back to the fumbling team if the ball is fumbled into the end zone or if the ball is fumbled into the pylon.

Despite the rule being in place at all levels of football for a century, the amount of criticism surrounding its perceived unfairness could potentially lead to a change in the future of the game. Regardless, any football fan is just happy to get more action in the springtime now with the XFL beginning this weekend.
