Odell Beckham Jr. to Chiefs? 3 reasons why Patrick Mahomes' Super Bowl champions are a bad fit
Odell Beckham Jr. once again finds himself headed into free agency in the shadow of the playoffs. The former Giants, Browns, Rams, Ravens and Dolphins receiver has a chance to be in a playoff game in late January in his third consecutive season with active game time.
However, as with seemingly every big-name receiver in recent months and years, the initial knee-jerk reaction is to see Beckham Jr. join Patrick Mahomes and the reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs. In this case, that would be unwise. Here's three reasons why.
Three reasons why Odell Beckham Jr. isn't a great fit with Chiefs
#1 - Not a locker room personality fit
Odell Beckham Jr. has a history of complaining about things going on in his job. In the case of the Cleveland Browns, his unhappiness led to him jumping ship entirely.
With DeAndre Hopkins, Xavier Worthy and Juju Smith-Schuster on the squad already, Beckham likely would fit behind those players. The offense hasn't been great this season, so Andy Reid would likely need to deal with hearing about Beckham Jr. needing the ball, which could hurt the chemistry of the team overall.
#2 - On pace for disastrous production in 2024
There's declining and then there's falling off a cliff. Unless Odell Beckham Jr. has a second wind unlike anything seen in his career, the wide receiver could end up with around 10% of his receiving yardage from last season, which wasn't impressive to begin with.
Last year, he earned 35 catches for 565 yards and three touchdowns. This year, his time with the Miami Dolphins wrapped up with nine catches for 55 yards and zero touchdowns. There simply isn't a need for a receiver with those kind of numbers this season already on a clear decline.
#3 - Hollywood Brown nearing return
The Kansas City Chiefs already have a wide receiver in line to join the squad in the near future. Marquise Hollywood Brown has been quietly recovering from injury in the background, and he has a 1000-yard season more recent than Beckham.
Odell Beckham Jr.'s last season in which he earned 1000 yards was in 2019, per Pro Football Reference. Hollywood Brown's most recent season in which he earned 1000 yards was in 2021. As such, the Chiefs have no realistic reason to take a chance on Odell Beckham Jr. They already have a player who they've already invested in nearing his arrival.
Plus, Brown likely already knows the playbook. Beckham would be starting from scratch.
