Odell Beckham Jr.'s father once blamed Baker Mayfield for WR's departure from team
Three days before the Cleveland Browns decided to release Odell Beckham Jr., the NFL WR's father, Odell Beckham Sr., publicly criticized then-Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield for his son's performance woes.
The surprising off-the-field drama took place on Instagram as Beckham Sr. shared an 11-minute video montage hours before the trade deadline.
Captioning the video with “Generally Behind Da Scene, BUT NOT TODAY," Beckham Sr. pointed out plays where his son was open yet overlooked or delivered off-target passes by Mayfield.
Reading into more detail, the Super Bowl LVI champion's father also used cryptic hashtags like “I hurt for him” and “disrespectful."
In fact, Beckham Sr. didn’t shy away from endorsing fans’ theories that Mayfield’s reluctance to involve Beckham Jr. in plays was deliberate.
One fan commented:
"No matter what anyone says I can tell Baker just doesn’t wanna get Odell the ball, he can have all the excuses in the world but it shows. He just genuinely doesn’t wanna give Odell the ball and when he does it’s usually in bad situations to make it look bad on Odell. Either he’s hating on Odell or he just doesn’t want him shining fr u can’t tell me otherwise at this point."
To which, Beckham Sr. replied: "✔️✔️✔️"
Odell Beckham Jr's 2021 NFL season with Cleveland Browns was quite lackluster. Over six games, he had just 232 receiving yards.
Odell Beckham Jr. won his first NFL championship ring post-release by Browns
After being waived by the Cleveland Browns on November 8, 2021, three days later, Odell Beckham Jr. signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams, where he won his first championship ring.
Interestingly, after joining the team, in mid-November 2021, the NFL WR revitalized his career. He caught TDs in five regular-season games and pulled off a 113-yard performance in the NFC Championship.
Although midway through Super Bowl LVI, a torn ACL sidelined him, Beckham Jr.'s early TD helped the Rams to take home the title after a long drought. The last time the Rams won a Super Bowl ring was in 2000.
On the NFL Top 100 Players of 2022, he was ranked 90th by his fellow NFL players.
