"On a scale of 1 to 10, 12": When Richard Sherman was frustrated over Aaron Rodgers avoiding him
Aaron Rodgers is arguably one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, among the likes of Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. He is also considered one of the smartest quarterbacks ever. Consecutive MVP awards in 2020 and 2021 late in his career are a testament to his mental skills, which helped him adapt.
He has displayed his intelligence on the field on multiple occasions, including a moment when he frustrated his rival and former Seahawks CB, Richard Sherman. Speaking to USA Today in 2015, Sherman had this to say when asked about his frustration level because of Rodgers.
“On a scale of 1 to 10, 12,”
Well, Sherman had a legitimate reason to feel that way about Rodgers.
Rodgers and Green Bay Packers plan against Sherman
The Packers faced the Seahawks in their opening game of the 2015 season, and Rodgers and the Packers’ think tank decided to avoid Sherman—a smart decision, according to Rodgers. He further revealed the reason behind the move.
“He’s a great cover guy. He’s very intelligent, he’s got great ball skills. He’s got very good timing with his technique, and he knows how to cover people. So you have to be aware of him, not scared of him, but you have a ton of respect for him.”
Packers coach Mike McCarthy was also involved in the strategic decision. McCarthy regretted a previous approach, leading to a plan to avoid Sherman this time.
On the field, the Packers moved then-No. 3 receiver Jarrett Boykin to Sherman’s side, placing receiver Jordy Nelson to the other side to free him up away from Sherman. The Packers eventually won 27-17 and Nelson ended up with nine catches for 83 yards in the victory.
After the game, Rodgers spoke on ESPN Milwaukee’s radio show, revealing that he isn’t scared of Sherman but is aware of his game presence.
Responding to the situation, Sherman said:
“I'm not surprised either way. But I expect them to execute their game plan, whatever that may be. I don't really have a gut feeling about how it's going to go.”
