Patrick Mahomes reveals Tom Brady's advice post the AFC Championship loss in 2019 - "That validated everything I did"
The Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes are one week away from facing the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, which will be held on February 12th, in Glendale, Arizona.
This will be the Chiefs' and Mahomes' third Super-Bowl appearance in the last five seasons.
During Mahomes' first playoff run, he and the Chiefs lost to the New England Patriots in overtime 37–31 during the 2019 AFC Championship, which negated his first time making it to the Super Bowl.
Following the loss, Brady gave him some post-game advice that "validated everything he did," said Mahomes.
Patrick Mahomes said via the New Heights podcast:
"After we lost to Tom [Brady] in the AFC Championship game, when he just came up, he grabbed me as I'm walking to the car I'm obviously upset. He's supposed to be celebrating with his team. And he just said, 'Hey, man, I just want to let you know you're doing it the right way.' And just him saying that, that just validated everything that I did that year."
He continued:
"It was just like, all right, all this time that I've been in the building and putting that work in, the GOAT is literally saying you're doing it the right way. And so those little pieces of advice, man, that stuff that I've taken, I tried to just just run with it. And that's helped me become who I am."
Patrick Mahomes won a Super Bowl the very next season after Tom Brady gave him advice in the AFC Championship game
Brady was right about Patrick Mahomes, doing things the right way and it showed next season. In the divisional round of the playoffs the following season, the Chiefs faced a 24–0 deficit against the Houston Texans early on and came back and won.
They beat the Titans a week later to advance to their first Super Bowl, and faced a 20-10 deficit against the 49ers but prevailed and won the game 31-20.
They returned to the Super Bowl the following season where they were looking to join elite company by repeating themselves as champions. However, the Bucs spoiled that and decimated the Chiefs, 31-9.
Two seasons later, the Chiefs are back and are looking to add another Lombardi Trophy to their Trophycase.
