Potential NFL trade sends the Colts right to the top to draft "Alabama guy" Bryce Young
The NFL draft is nearly two months away, and teams have already begun the process by doing their due diligence in the pre-draft and scouting process.
This is a crucial time for many teams at the bottom of the league to improve their roster with higher draft picks. Typically, most teams that pick in the top ten are QB-needy teams.
There are currently eight possible teams in the top 10 that could select a quarterback.
One of those teams is the Indianapolis Colts, who hold the fourth overall pick.
Owner Jim Irsay didn't shy away from who the team is targeting. While speaking to the media, the team introduced new head coach Shane Steichen this week and Irsay said he likes the Alabama guy, aka Bryce Young.
Irsay said:
"No one can shy away about what a quarterback means in this league.. Do you stay put? Do you trade up? There's many things you can do Knowing we're going to have to find a young QB to develop... The Alabama (Bryce Young) guy doesn't look bad. It'll be exciting I think that shows that we have talent here at those games so we're looking forward to Shane coming in and utilizing that talent."
Irsay has also been flirting with the idea of trading up for the number-one overall pick with the Chicago Bears. Yesterday, he posted a picture of himself at the Lincoln Park Zoo as a child on Twitter, saying that his relationship with the Chicago Bear goes back more than 60 years.
Why the Colts should trade up for Bryce Young
The Colts have been searching for their franchise quarterback since Andrew Luck retired. They've spent the last three seasons using veteran quarterbacks Matt Ryan, Carson Wentz and Philip Rivers, and it hasn't paid off.
The team needs a young, dual-threat quarterback that can develop into their franchise. Drafting Young would give them what they're looking for.
What a potential trade with the Chicago Bears for the number-one overall pick would look like
It would cost an arm and a leg to trade up to number one overall. Luckily for Indianapolis, they would only have to move up three spots as they hold the fourth overall pick.
Since they would only trade up three spots, they wouldn't have to give up more than what they thought would be a 'fair' trade.
In a possible scenario:
Bears get Colts' 2023 first-round pick, 2023 second-round pick, and 2024 first-round pick
Colts get Bears' No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft
The Bears move back three spots and still select one of the best defenders in the draft in Jalen Carter or Will Anderson, while the Colts get 'their guy' in Young.
Who will win the Colts-Bears trade?
In this possible scenario, both teams will come out on top as winners.
Indianapolis would finally get Young, a franchise quarterback who has the potential to be one of the best young QBs of the future.
The Bears would benefit from a very early second-round pick, they'd still get the best defensive player in the draft possibly, and would load up on another first-round pick in next year's draft.
