Cam Newton news & rumors: Are the Saints looking at signing the QB?

Cam Newton is currently not playing in the NFL, but that doesn't keep him out of the headlines. The former Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots quarterback has now been linked with a move to the New Orleans Saints.

While there is no concrete indication that Newton will sign with the NFC team, the reports of the veteran quarterback signing for the Saints refuse to go away. The team was reportedly interested in bringing the quarterback to New Orleans after Jameis Winston went down with a dreaded ACL injury.

Given how poorly the Saints have played this season with Winston and Andy Dalton to the tune of a 3-6 record, rumors are swirling about Newton and the Saints.

Sign Cam Newton to a 1 day contract just to wear the black helmet.

So, could the Saints turn to the former NFL MVP as an answer to their current problems? Possibly, but at this stage, there are just rumors. Much like last year, and nothing happened. But as they say, there is no smoke without fire.

Currently a free agent, the prospect of the Saints turning to Newton as their savior is intriguing. The 33-year-old hasn't played any football this season, so wanting him to come in and play right away isn't happening.

I’m seeing like 10 quarterbacks play each Sunday with an arm more cooked than Cam Newton’s ever was.

If the Saints wait a few weeks, the season is already half over, and adding another few games for Newton to get "game ready" isn't viable.

When did Cam Newton last play in the NFL?

The 33-year-old played for the Carolina Panthers last season. But his return to the team after spending a season in New England with the Patriots wasn't too exciting. Newton played five games and lost all five. He threw for 684 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions.

It is a massive fall from grace, considering where the quarterback was five years ago. A troubled stint in New England saw him end his only season with a 7-8 record before returning to Carolina.

Long gone are the MVP days and the 15-1 season that saw him lead the Panthers to the Super Bowl. Since that season in 2015, Cam Newton hasn't had a winning season.

Whether or not the Saints see Cam Newton as the answer remains to be seen, but with Andy Dalton and Jameis Winston struggling, they couldn't do any worse. Could they?
