Recalling the time retired safety Derek Wolfe told Philip Rivers that he would "eat his kids"

For 10 grueling seasons, Derek Wolfe gave it his all on the football field. Each and every Sunday, Wolfe strapped on his shoulder pads, threw on his jersey, and proceeded to lay the lumber against his opponents.

While he was never chosen as a Pro Bowler, he did play a significant role on a Super Bowl-winning team with the Denver Broncos.

At the age of 32, having missed the entirety of the 2021 season due to injuries, Wolfe has decided to walk away from the game. As the former defensive player now begins life on the sidelines permanently, he can look back at his time in the NFL.

One of the most famous, or infamous, incidents from his career was when he told a player that he would "eat his kids."

TJ Ward, Derek Wolfe’s former teammate, once divulged that Wolfe had told Tom Brady that he would “eat his kids” during a heated showdown. Although the gruesome details were true, it was actually Philip Rivers who was on the receiving end of the tongue lashing, not Brady.

Derek Wolfe said during an interview with Barstool Sports in 2016:

“We were going back and forth the whole game. I said some things that I shouldn’t have said probably, but I was pissed off. TJ was misspoken when he said I said that about Tom Brady. That was not Tom Brady. So sorry, Tom, for the misunderstanding.”

In a bit of irony, Rivers currently has a total of nine kids. And while Wolfe was simply being facetious in his attempts to get under the signal-caller's skin, he was likely well aware of the number of children Rivers currently has.

Derek Wolfe was taken on board by the Denver Broncos as the 36th overall pick in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He played eight seasons for the Broncos (2012-19) and won the Super Bowl 50 with them in 2015.

Wolfe starred with five tackles in the Super Bowl, against Carolina Panthers. That was the high point of his career.

For the 2020 season, he joined Baltimore Ravens. That would be his last season in NFL. He got injured next year and decided to call it a day in 2022.

Wolfe ended up with 122 appearances where he registered 350 tackles and 34 sacks.
