According to The Virginian-Pilot, Michael Vick, a former NFL quarterback and Virginia native, said Monday that he had interviewed for the head coaching position at Norfolk State. Vick played 13 seasons in the NFL and then became an NFL analyst for Fox Sports.

Vick reportedly spoke to Norfolk State's president and athletic director and expects a resolution soon. The article online posted by The Virginian-Pilot said:

“Vick said Norfolk State officials reached out to him and that he is intrigued by the potential opportunity of giving back to the Hampton Roads community that has long supported him.”

Vick has no coaching experience but said he knows what it takes to lead a team. He said he would hire a seasoned staff which would help him in his transition.

The job opening at Norfolk State has been open for nearly a month as the school dismissed Dawson Odums on Nov. 26.

Before becoming probably the best dual-threat quarterback in NFL history, Michael Vick was tearing up the football field in his native state of Virginia, where he hopes to become the head coach at Norfolk State.

Vick was born and raised in Newport News, Virginia. As a freshman in high school, Vick played for Homer L. Ferguson High School and threw for 400 yards in a game. The school shut down the following year and he played the remainder of his three years of high school ball at Warwick High School.

In his three years at Warwick High School, Vick threw 4,846 yards and 43 touchdowns while rushing for 1,048 yards and 18 touchdowns. This earned him a scholarship to Virginia Tech, where he decided to stay in his home state to play college football.

At Virginia Tech, Vick threw for over 3,000 yards and 21 touchdowns. He rushed for over 1,200 yards and 17 touchdowns in two seasons played.

Vick was selected first overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2001 NFL Draft. He played 13 seasons for the Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

After retiring, Vick has served as a football analyst for Fox Sports and may start being a coach soon.
