NFL rumors: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos prepares to splash $5,000,000,000 to purchase NFC west team
Jeff Bezos is the second-richest man in the world per Forbes, and he could be poised to use some of that money to buy an NFL team. Bezos isn't originally from the Seattle area, but he has connections to it thanks to Amazon and SI reports that he has shown some interest in becoming the owner of the Seattle Seahawks.
The Amazon founder does have a ton of money, but it's not all liquid. If he was to buy a team, he'd need to gather up hard cash instead of investments. He's recently been accumulating some cash, as he sold some Amazon stock equating to $13.5 billion from multiple sales.
That would be more than enough to purchase the Seattle Seahawks, as they're currently valued at $5 billion, as per Forbes. He could buy them outright, but he might become the majority owner of a group that would help alleviate some of the cost on Jeff Bezos' end.
The Seahawks are expected to be sold at some point. Prior to May 2024, the sale of the team would have given late owner Paul Allen's trust 10% of the proceeds of any sale to go towards the Public Stadium Authority of Seattle. That no longer applies.
The businessman showed interest in buying the Washington Commanders, but he really never got too involved in that process. That showed his interest in buying a team, but it seems his real goal now is to own a different one than the one Josh Harris and company bought from Dan Snyder.
Jeff Bezos could be making moves to buy Seahawks
The NFL would likely approve this sale to Bezos since he has more money than anyone in the world not named Elon Musk. He'd be able to invest in the team and the league, and that's something they like.
He's also not terribly controversial, at least not like former owners Jerry Richardson, Dan Snyder, and others have been. Amazon doesn't have the best reputation, but Bezos does not appear to have major skeletons in the closet. The league would likely see no reason to oppose this sale.
