NFL Rumors: Buccaneers seemingly decided on Tom Brady replacement for 2023

Tom Brady appears to be done with the Buccaneers for good. Without No. 12 at the helm, the team has no choice but to move forward in finding his replacement. Some speculate that the Buccaneers will look to the NFL Draft or free agency to find a successor, but the Buccaneers are apparently content to look inward.

NFL Insider Jeff Darlington revealed on NFL Live that Tampa Bay is working under the assumption that backup Kyle Trask will be ready to take over in 2023. He put it this way:

"The Bucs, from my conversations with the organization, they do feel like at least Kyle Trask is likely to be the guy under center. I feel pretty confident that they're going that direction, whether that's due to some salary cap concerns, because they did go all in on Tom Brady... to try to build around him. And now they have to pay [some] of that price."

He added that he thinks GM Jason Licht believes that "Kyle Trask is the best QB in the division."

He continued, claiming that the general manager isn't waiving the white flag by making the decision:

"I still think that Jason Licht, the general manager, is never just going to lay down by any means. But I think he also believes Kyle Trask has what it takes to be a winner in this league."
Dave Canales says he really liked Kyle Trask coming out of college. Says the Bucs are going to help him be a “point guard,” who can succeed by distributing to very good skill-position players. Says it is a quarterback-friendly offense.

Lastly, he claimed that even with Brady out of the picture, the team has the best quarterback in the NFC South:

"He looks around the division and he says, 'Well, we hope we got the best quarterback in the division at the very least.' I'm not saying that means much, but I think that he at least thinks they can be competitive with Kyle Trask."

The likely successor to Tom Brady has had to wait a long time for this moment, but based on what he did in college, fans should feel confident that he is ready. The quarterback previously played for Florida in college. He steadily improved over the course of three seasons. In his sophomore year, he recorded his first game stats, earning one touchdown and zero interceptions.

In his junior year, he made a big jump, throwing for 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions. In 2020, his final year in college, he threw for 43 touchdowns and eight interceptions. The big jumps in production show the quarterback is coachable and willing to push himself over multiple years.

In addition, he has received the infamous "Aaron Rodgers" treatment for letting him sit multiple seasons behind the most refined winner in league history. Put simply, Trask has been given all of the pieces needed to pop. Also, when he does get to the Gridiron, the offense he's joining has most of the quality pieces that helped Brady get to 40 touchdowns in each of his first two seasons with the team.
