NFL Rumors: Chargers' Justin Herbert set to sign massive $295 million dollar extension
Justin Herbert could be in for a massive payday during the 2023 NFL offseason.
He is reportedly on the verge of signing a brand new contract extension with the Los Angeles Chargers worth $295 million over six years. This would bring his AAV to $49.17 million, making him one of the highest paid players in the entire NFL.
If the rumors about the details of his looming contract are in fact true, Justin Herbert would be the second-highest paid player in the NFL based on AAV. He would be trailing only Aaron Rodgers, the first athlete in American sports history to sign a contract worth more than $50 million in AAV.
In terms of total contract value, Herbert's rumored $295 million would also be the second-most in the entire NFL. He would only trail Patrick Mahomes' $450 million deal, the largest single contract by any athlete in American sports history.
Herbert has spent just three years in the NFL, but has already elevated himself to be among the best quarterbacks in the league. He will be just 25 years old when the 2023 season begins, so he can realistically continue to improve even further.
Does Justin Herbert deserve one of the largest contracts in NFL history?
Justin Herbert was selected with the sixth overall pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Chargers. He is already among the most productive current quarterbacks.
Herbert took the league by storm during his impressive rookie season in 2020. He recorded a massive 4,336 passing yards with 31 touchdowns and just ten interceptions. He was deservedly named the Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Herbert elevated his game even further during his second season with the Chargers in 2021. He became just the ninth quarterback in NFL history to exceed 5,000 passing yards in a single season. He also threw 38 touchdown passes on his way to being selected to his first Pro Bowl.
The 2022 NFL season was business as usual for Herbert, finishing among the top ten players for the NFL MVP award. He also made his first appearance in the NFL playoffs. In just three years as a starter, he has already recorded more than 14,000 passing yards and is just six touchdowns shy of 100 TDs.
Justin Herbert appears ready to be among the elite quarterbacks in the NFL for many years to come. His price tag will likely only get higher as the years go by, so it makes sense for the Chargers to lock him into a long-term contract now.
