NFL Rumors: Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy viewed as prime candidate to bag HC role in 2023
Could Eric Bieniemy be leaving the Kansas City Chiefs to take on a head coaching role? There are already three vacant head coaching positions in the National Football League: the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos.
While there could certainly be additional openings after the season concludes, it appears that one name continues to be mentioned as a candidate, and that's Eric Bieniemy.
Over the past few years, the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator has interviewed for jobs across the National Football League, to no avail. As many continue to question why he has never been hired, signs are pointing out that this may finally be his opportunity to branch out and coach his own team. He was reportedly offered the University of Colorado head coaching job in 2020 but turned it down.
ESPN's Dan Graziano is reporting that the offensive coordinator's name is one that keeps coming up and that it appears teams are even more interested in interviewing him this year than they have in years past. Graziano believes that Eric Bieniemy will definitely secure an interview with the Denver Broncos, whose lackluster offense led to first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett being fired earlier this week.
Bieniemy's ability to keep the Kansas City Chiefs offense explosive even with the departure of wide receiver Tyreek Hill, shows the abilities and talent he has as an offensive play caller.
He won't be the first Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator to leave for a head coaching job. His two previous successors, Matt Nagy and Doug Pederson have already done so.
How long has Eric Bieniemy been the Kansas City Chiefs OC?
As Eric Bieniemy continues to look for an opportunity to become an NFL head coach, he has been building his resume for the past few decades. He has been the offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs for the past five seasons. In that span, the Chiefs have made two Super Bowl appearances, winning one Lombardi Trophy.
Kansas City has won the AFC West every season and made it to the AFC Championship game as well.
Before being promoted to offensive coordinator, he was the running backs coach for the Chiefs from 2013. Before being hired by the Chiefs, he was the offensive coordinator at the University of Colorado. Prior to Colorado, he was the running backs coach and assistant head coach for the Minnesota Vikings from 2006 to 2010.
