NFL Rumors: Cowboys decided on futures of Tony Pollard and Ezekiel Elliot
The Dallas Cowboys have big decisions to make this offseason when it comes to which players they will retain and which ones they will move on from. Most specifically in the offensive backfield with running backs Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard.
Pollard finished out the fourth and final year of his rookie contract at the end of the 2022 NFL season. According to many NFL personnel at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, the Cowboys are expected to use the franchise tag on Pollard this season, which is about $10,000,000 next season.
In the last two seasons, Pollard has been a breakout star for the Dallas offense. He rushed for 1,000 yards and had 400 receiving yards this past season.
So, what does that mean for running back Ezekiel Elliott? The Dallas Cowboys are expected to re-work Elliott's contract for next season to free up more salary cap space. As of right now, Elliott is due to make $16.7 million in the 2023 NFL season.
Jerry Jones has declared in the past that he wants to keep Elliott around for the future, and at just 27 years old, he does have many playing years ahead of him. So, the Cowboys could have two solid running backs on their roster for a few more years if they can work out the financial aspects of their contracts.
Cowboys name Brian Schottenheimer new Offensive Coordinator
Kellen Moore's departure as offensive coordinator left the door open for the Dallas Cowboys to make decisions about the offense. Before officially hiring a new coordinator, the team decided that head coach Mike McCarthy will call plays on offense next season.
This week, Dallas filled the position by promoting Brian Schottenheimer to the offensive coordinator role. Previously, Schottenheimer worked as an Offensive Consultant for the team. He was essentially in charge of scouting for Dallas' opponent the following week.
Mike McCarthy created this position in 2021 when he was hired. It's a way to be prepared for the next opponent while the team is practicing for the upcoming opponent.
The position has become a valuable asset for Dallas and they will now look towards filling that position as well.
Prior to being hired by Dallas, Schottenheimer had vast experience in the NFL. His roles include being the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets from 2006-2011 and the same role with the St. Louis Rams from 2012-2014. He was the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks from 2018 until 2020. He was also the passing game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021.
