NFL Rumors: Cowboys no longer interested in star receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
The Dallas Cowboys were long thought to be all-in on Odell Beckham Jr. after the public courting of the receiver last season. They reported "positive discussions" over the last few weeks, with some thinking the deal was as good as done.
But news broke today that the Cowboys had traded for Houston Texans speedster Brandin Cooks. This likely ends the franchise's search for a star receiver to help out CeeDee Lamb.
With the acquisition of Cooks, what does it mean for Dallas' pursuit of Beckham Jr.? In short, it's over, according to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News.
This could come as no surprise really as the Cowboys likely only had room in their salary cap for one "splash" signing and that has proved to be Cooks.
The price that Dallas paid for Cooks is also far better than Beckham Jr. as the franchise only gave up a fifth and a sixth-round pick. Beckham would have cost Dallas nothing. But the injuries and off-field issues seemed to be too much for the Cowboys and they decided to go with Cooks instead.
Odell Beckham Jr. still has plenty of suitors
Despite Dallas going in a different direction in their receiver search, Beckham Jr. still has plenty of suitors lining up to secure his services. The likes of New England, Buffalo, Baltimore, and a host of others are all thought to be interested in adding the receiver to their rosters.
Whether that happens or not remains to be seen. But the star receiver is now back to full health and, from all reports, had a great workout in Arizona last week in front of a handful of NFL scouts.
There can be no doubt that he will be getting a contract this offseason. It is just a matter of where and for how much. There were reports that he wanted $20 million APY but he stated that that isn't the case.
What teams will offer him salary-wise is likely to be in the $11 million APY bracket and for a player who is coming off two ACL injuries, that is more than justified.
But it likely won't be Dallas that makes a move on him anymore.
